Roy was born in Croydon, Surrey where he lived until 1996 when he moved to Essex to take up the post as Head of Music at a school in South Hornchurch. As a trumpet player he studied at the London College of Music for three years before going into full time teaching. His performing career has involved playing in orchestras, jazz bands, shows, brass quintets and brass bands in this country and in Europe, including many years with the Band of the Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) based in the City of London. His conducting career has included being assistant MD for the Croydon Brass Band and conducting the British Windband at performances in Regent's Park, London.
