Musical Director

Harmonie Concert Band are seeking a Musical Director to lead us in achieving musical excellence while fostering a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

We are a symphonic wind band based in Rayleigh, South Essex, preparing to celebrate our 50th anniversary in 2026. The band welcomes musicians of all ages who share our commitment to developing musical skill, broadening repertoire, and enjoying the experience of making music together.

With around 50 active members from across Essex, we rehearse on Wednesday evenings and maintain an extensive music library covering a wide repertoire – from classical works and marches to popular, film, and stage music.

We typically perform five to six times a year, including bandstands, community events, and formal concerts, often in collaboration with other music and performing arts organisations. Our performances have taken us to venues throughout Essex and further afield, including Eastbourne and Windsor Castle.

We are looking for someone who would enjoy the challenge of bringing the best out of the band whilst working in a friendly community atmosphere. The Musical Director is responsible to the Committee and will manage all musical matters, including music and programme selection and rehearsal schedules.  This is a freelance position, and a suitable fee will be agreed with the successful candidate.

Role Overview:

As the Musical Director, you will be responsible for leading all musical aspects of our band. This includes:

  • Music and Programme Selection: Curate and select appropriate music that reflects the band’s ability, ambitions, and audience.

  • Rehearsal Scheduling: Plan and conduct rehearsals to ensure musical progress and effective preparation for performances.

  • Musical Leadership: Provide clear musical direction, maintaining high performance standards while supporting the enjoyment and engagement of all members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Committee to align musical choices with the band’s vision and goals.

  • Develop and implement rehearsal plans that maximise band performance.

  • Foster a positive and encouraging environment that enhances teamwork and individual growth.

  • Oversee all musical preparation and performance delivery.

How to Apply:

If you are excited about the opportunity to make a significant impact on our band and thrive in a friendly community atmosphere, we would love to hear from you. Please send your CV and a covering letter detailing your relevant experience by clicking the button below.
